Tawakoni Area Public Library

In the early 1980’s a group of thirteen people had a shared dream. They knew that their small lake community lacked one very important institution, a library. On October 21, 1982, a board was selected and the process to build a library in West Tawakoni was underway. A “barn raisin” made the library a reality in 1983. The 640 square foot library had the dubious honor of being the smallest library in Texas! During the first six months of operation, 526 citizens had registered for library cards and over 1,000 patrons had crossed the threshold to check out books from the collection of only 3,325.

Thanks to the support of our community, a new 3,600 square foot library was opened in June of 2006. The library now contains a collection of 27,000 books and 850 DVDs. About 1,200 patrons per month cross the threshold today and 300 to 400 patrons use the ten public access computers. A grant from the Tocker Foundation will enable the library to add four more computers and a laser printer in the near future. We are very proud to be able to serve the children of the area through reading and science activities.

God willing, the Tawakoni Library will continue to serve the Lake area for many years to come.
